Attracting people to Cornwall:

To attract people from outside the area, we are promoting the Introduction to Cornwall scheme which
enables GPs and other experienced primary care clinicians to have a ‘paid holiday’ by committing to
working 4 paid locum sessions and in return receiving up to £500 towards their holiday accommodation.
We have also received national funding which allows us to offer up to a £10,000 relocation grant to GPs
moving to Cornwall. Finally, of course this event provides a great opportunity for anyone thinking about a
job in Cornwall to come and meet people and find out more.

GP Vacancies:

In addition to the above, KHCIC is planning this day in conjunction with GP Trainers so that local ST3s as well
as newly qualified GPs from outside Cornwall can be targeted. We have again been fortunate to attract
some national funding to help to support newly qualified GPs as they transition into their first substantive
role. A recent survey of new GPs, trainees and trainers has given us important information which we are
now using to shape the offer and we will circulate details to practices as soon as this is finalised.

Importantly it will complement the national new to practice scheme and provide funding to practices with
recruitment challenges to give new recruits extra support. On the day local trainees will have opportunities
to get advice about looking for jobs including mock interviews.

Practice nursing:

We are linking up with medical schools to encourage newly qualified nurses interested in a
career in primary care to come along as well as encouraging those with experience or looking for a move
into primary care both locally and from elsewhere to come along also.

We are seeking advice from colleagues in various professional groups as to how best to attract
interest in opportunities both locally and nationally. The Introduction to Cornwall scheme is available
to all experienced primary care clinicians looking to relocate.

The Cornwall Transition Pilot Programme

Recruiting and Retaining Newly Qualified GPs in Cornwall

In common with the rest of the UK, Cornwall has a problem with retention of GPs in our practice workforce. GPs are needed to provide long term continuity of care to patients which is an essential intrinsic component of high-quality effective healthcare. We are fortunate to have secured funding to support an innovative pilot programme. This will assess the benefits to practices of maximising support for their newest GPs, whilst they acquire skills and confidence in provision of long-term continuity of care for patients.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss the event please contact Katy Thorogood [email protected]

Please ensure that you set up and take down your stand outside the above times please. The Recruitment Event stands will be in the Sea View (3rd floor) Beech and Oak suites (2nd floor). We will let you know where your stand is allocated once we have everyone’s booking forms.

There is limited car parking immediately outside the conference centre so pleas only use this for drop off and collection and then move your car to the main visitors car park. Where possible please car-share. The access code for the visitors car park on that day will be 1095.

Stands will each have a table and 2/3 chairs but you will need to bring any other display materials etc that you wish to use. You are not permitted to put anything on the walls.

There will be extensive national and local advertising and social media campaigns so we can attract potential recruits to GP and other primary care clinical roles across Cornwall. As well as Practice/PCN stands we will have KHCIC stands with information about the various activities/support we can offer practices. The GP Trainers will be running mock interviews for ST3’s on the day.

Depending on the number of stands booked we hope to be able to allocate a room or relatively quiet space where you could have a more detailed discussion/informal interview with potential candidates.

If you need any display materials printed for the event (which you cannot print locally eg larger posters) remember the conference centre is on the site of St Austell Print Works and they will be able to provide this service for material sent to them prior to the event for collection on the day (but you will be charged)

A Success Story

From Receptionist to Treatment Room Nurse

Meet Jodie. In 2015 Jodie was a Receptionist at St Austell Healthcare, but over the past six years, she has been supported to train as a nurse, recently graduating from Plymouth University. Jodie is now working as a Treatment Room Nurse at the St Austell Practice where it all began.
