Our History



Kernow Health Community Interest Company was founded in April 2011 to create a clinically-led Referral Management Service (RMS) for practices in North, Mid and West Cornwall.

The RMS helps patients choose and book appointments that are convenient to them and supports high quality referrals using guidelines developed in a partnership between Primary and Secondary Care that reduced wastage and improved the patient journey; it became a successful model which has since be replicated in other areas of England. When Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG's) formed, the responsibility for the RMS passed to NHS Kernow; KHCIC then entered a "dormant" phase.



In 2015, it was clear with the significant reforms under way in the Health and Social Care system, that KH CIC needed to be fully re-established at scale in order to bid for and win contracts that might otherwise be lost from General Practice and Cornwall. As a strategic GP Federation, our Board has representation from each of our 6 localities and our members have shaped out redevelopment over the last 3 years. We have a joint partnership with our LMC and have formed a Compact with our CCG. 

Our strategic aim and objectives are to:

1) exert positive influence with commissioners and providers to improve the quality of patient care

2) ensure that General Practice is the heart of community services re-design

3) bid for 'at scale' services locally to secure income that can be reinvested in delivering better care

4) support General Practice to be resilient, sustainable and an enjoyable place to work, ensuring we can attract staff and partners to work in this fantastic County.
